Why Choose Reclaimed Wide Plank Wood?
Uniqueness
Reclaimed wood often has an interesting history. Bingham Lumber’s reclaimed products are 100% sourced from reclaimed structures.
Sustainable
Using reclaimed lumber products doesn’t pose any additional environmental threats, such as cutting down trees for new lumber.
Durability
As compared to virgin wood, reclaimed wood is stronger by up to 40 points on the Janka scale of hardness.
What is Reclaimed Wood?
Throughout the Mid-West and up and down the eastern seaboard lives a deep rooted history in agriculture and farming that has existed since the arrival of the first American settlers. The result is a landscape that has been dotted with beautiful old barns steeped in American history and use that has imbued them with character, charm and unique features. These features are the reason for the recent increase in popularity of reclaimed barn siding, paneling, and the overall use of reclaimed materials in new construction. Reclaimed wood is high-quality “upcycled” wood that’s been taken from various sources like:
• Factories
• Old barns
• Retired ships
• Stock farms
• Warehouses
• Wine casts
There are a number of reasons to recycle old lumber from reclaimed barns, starting with the recycled wood’s unique characteristics:
Physical Appearance
There is nothing on the market today that compares to reclaimed barn wood. Many of these old barns were built over a hundred years ago using virgin timber that no longer exists. Much of this wood has been gently weathered and features unique coloring, beautiful grain patterns and knot structure, insect markings, and nail holes that add character and charm to the wood. Properly handled and processed for modern use, the beauty and functionality of recycled lumber is unmatched.
Strength
Milled from mature, slow-growing trees, recycled lumber has an unparalleled strength that is simply unavailable in today’s commercial forestry products. Because of the dense forest canopies in these virgin forests there was greater competition for light, water, and other nutrients which resulted in very slow growth for many pines and hardwoods. This slow-growth and therefor tight grain gives the wood a density that is unparalleled by today’s pines and hardwoods.
Positive Environmental Impact
Every year tons of construction materials are disposed of in landfills, much of which comes from the demolition of old or antiquated buildings. By carefully deconstructing and recycling these construction materials we can save space in these landfills and make a positive impact for future generations. Along with recycling wood products, asphalt shingles, windows, antique corbels and columns, brick, stone, tiles and other materials are also recycled and reused in new construction and renovation.
What is Wide Plank Flooring?
Wide Plank flooring, in both hard and softwoods are milled from lumber cut from the main trunk of the tree and contain more heartwood and can be produced in wider widths – sometimes as much as 10-20 inches wide – and lengths up to 16 feet. At Bingham Lumber, we specialize in the production of wide plank hardwood flooring in a variety of species and grades. Thickness can be custom ordered, however our flooring is typically three-quarters of an inch. Anything material finishing at less than three quarters of an inch can still be utilized as a paneling for a ceiling or wainscoting.
There are many reasons why wider plank flooring is generally perceived as having greater value than that of the strip flooring. Although they are both made from the same tree, as mentioned previously, wider planks often mean more heartwood which in turn means a greater density and durability. Wider plank floors were also used long ago, as they took less time to put down and utilized the larger old growth timber harvested from the virgin forests of the time. This has given the wide plank floor a timeless look and feel which is enhanced even more so when milled from reclaimed lumber, originally harvested during a similar time. This reclaimed flooring features characteristics such as nail holes, slight surface checking, and insect markings much like that of the old colonial floors.
Whether it be a Classic Select Maple Floor or a Reclaimed Pumpkin Pine, wide plank flooring will bring value and tradition to any home.
